Bold Beginnings + Going Strong

In 2008, a small group of Stanford alums identified an opportunity at their 10-year class reunion.

With burgeoning real estate careers, Chad Hagle (’98) and several classmates recognized there was no uniquely Stanford mechanism empowering them to inspire, support, and challenge each other to move their careers and industry forward. In 2009, they founded SPIRE to do just that.

SPIRE quickly grew to become Stanford’s largest alumni association, expanding its mission to welcome those with careers in placemaking and the larger built environment. We extended our reach with regional and online events, and added engaging and exciting programs, including the student mentorship and grant initiatives.

SPIRE was built on a sturdy foundation. More than a decade in, we’re going strong. And we have big plans to do more of what we do best: create + deepen connections, promote innovation, and increase impact.

“We came up with the Stanford definition of real estate, which is a very inclusive—encompassing everything from law to sustainability and the environment, to planning—allowing us to tap into these different areas at Stanford.”

–Chad Hagle, (’98) SPIRE Founder, Emeritus Board Member + SREC Member

"The three pillars, which the founders created in the first week of SPIRE’s existence, are still the same three pillars we have today. They are, supporting: alumni in their professional development and networking, students interested in the industry, and real estate education at Stanford."

–Shallene Cua Gross, (’06, MBA ‘10) SPIRE Board Member + SREC Member

“Chad told me about his dream…an alumni club that would be a wonderful place for Stanford alumni who were involved in the real estate industry to interact with each other and with the university. What I didn’t expect, was how popular and successful it would be. If you asked me how I would want SPIRE to evolve in the years to come, I would say, ‘Do more of the same.’”
