Rowan D. Wilson

Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals

Rowan D. Wilson, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, was born in Pomona, California and grew up in Berkeley, California. He attended Harvard College, where he earned his A.B. degree in 1981, and later went on to obtain his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1984. Following his education, he served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable James R. Browning, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. After his clerkship, Judge Wilson joined the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City, where he started as an associate and eventually became a partner. He held this position until his appointment as an Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals in 2017, later being nominated and confirmed as Chief Judge in 2023. Throughout his career, Judge Wilson actively engaged in pro bono work and served on the boards of various charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

Hon. Judy H. Kim

Co-President

In November 2016, Justice Judy H. Kim became the first Korean American elected judge in New York State. As an elected Civil Court judge, she served in the Manhattan Criminal Court for two years and then returned to New York County Civil Court in January 2019.  In January 2022, she was elevated to Acting Justice of the Supreme Court in the New York State Supreme Court, New York County and presides over cases in the City IAS Part.

About Hon. Judy H. Kim

In November 2016, Justice Judy H. Kim became the first Korean American elected judge in New York State. Justice Kim has been an active JALBCA Board member since 2010. She was first introduced to the organization after an introduction was made by a mutual friend to a former judge and current board member who graciously agreed to speak with her immediately after she learned she had breast cancer at the age of 37.  At that time, she was an associate counsel at an agency and found it comforting to speak to someone about her situation and to obtain some important information, including that her medical insurance covered breast cancer treatment and care if received from a hospital considered a “Center for Excellence”.  With this knowledge, she received treatment and since then all post-cancer care from one of these centers.

As a Board member, Justice Kim immediately joined the Survivor Committee and Grants Committee.  Later in 2015, she re-joined the board as a member and then as Secretary in 2018.  In 2022, she served as the Moderator of the 25th Annual Ellen P. Hermanson Memorial Symposium and in 2023 she served as Executive Producer of the 26th Annual Ellen P. Hermanson Memorial Symposium.  Justice Kim continues to serve on the Grants Committee that reviews and recommends the approval of mission-oriented organizations for grants and as co-chair of the Programs Committee. 

Justice Kim previously served on the board of the Stonewall Community Development Corporation (a non-profit that helps LGBTQ+ seniors find affordable, supportive and safe housing) and on the boards of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), the Korean American Lawyers of Greater New York (KALAGNY) and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY).  Currently, she serves on the board of the Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) and is a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Diversity Pipeline Initiative Committee and its State Courts of Superior Jurisdiction Committee.

Virginia K. Trunkes

Co-President

Virginia K. Trunkes is a partner in the New York office of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, LLP and is a member of its Construction Practice Group. Ms. Trunkes represents property owners, construction managers, contractors, subcontractors and design professionals in negotiating their construction and design services contracts, in navigating and overcoming the obstacles inherent in construction projects and, if necessary, in fiercely advocating on her clients’ behalf in state and federal court.

Ms. Trunkes has been an active JALBCA Board member since 2015, motivated by the impact of breast cancer on her mother following her diagnosis at age 33. Ms. Trunkes witnessed first-hand the devastating emotional toll that the disease, surgery, treatment and post-recovery maintenance can take on the directly-afflicted and their families and caregivers. She has served on JALBCA’s Executive Committee as a Vice President. During her JALBCA tenure, Ms. Trunkes has co-developed JALBCA’s educational programs and symposia focusing on scientific advances as well as legal implications. As a member of JALBCA’s Grants Committee, she has reviewed and recommended approval of grant applications from non-profit organizations providing free legal services to those managing a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. As Co-Chair of JALBCA’s Membership Committee, Ms. Trunkes has also worked zealously to better define the value of JALBCA membership and the benefits it offers to its community, in an attempt to broaden JALBCA’s reach and create a greater impact.

Ms. Trunkes previously served on the Board of the National Alliance for Mental Illness-NYC, during which time she also served as Chair of the New York City Bar Association’s Mental Health Law Committee. And throughout her career, Ms. Trunkes has been an active member of local and national bar associations focusing on the construction industry, small businesses, land development and public policies.

Fanni Koszeg

Before joining JALBCA as Executive Director in September 2022, Fanni Koszeg practiced corporate and securities law at several prestigious law firms in London and New York and served on the US Senate’s temporary bi-partisan Congressional Oversight Panel overseeing the bank bailout following the 2008 financial crisis. She has worked as a reporter and legal analyst for Bloomberg and continues to work as an attorney helping start-up companies launch their businesses.

About Fanni Koszeg

Before joining JALBCA as Executive Director in September 2022, Fanni Koszeg practiced corporate and securities law at several prestigious law firms in London and New York and served on the US Senate’s temporary bi-partisan Congressional Oversight Panel overseeing the bank bailout following the 2008 financial crisis. She has worked as a reporter and legal analyst for Bloomberg and continues to work as an attorney helping start-up companies launch their businesses.

Throughout her career, Fanni has maintained an active pro bono practice primarily focusing on women’s issues and immigration law. Fanni is an active member of the New York City Bar Association’s Immigration Law Committee and has successfully represented female asylum-seekers fleeing violence and persecution. Having been personally touched by cancer amongst her family and friends, she is deeply committed to JALBCA’s mission.

Fanni lives in Brooklyn with her husband and her teenage son. She grew up in Budapest, Hungary, graduated from Harvard Law School and is a member of the New York State Bar. She is trilingual in English, Hungarian and French and speaks fluent German and Spanish.
